The U.S. government is sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million American households, and asking recipients to spend the cash in order to jump start the economy.

What better way to stimulate the economy --and the minds of your fellow Americans-- than by helping start an independent bookstore? By contributing some or all of your stimulus check, you'll help create a place where people can buy good literature for decades to come -- and you'll also get cool premiums like shirts and discounted books.

Stimulating News:

The Stimulating Reading project has already inspired at least one Stimulating Reader to invest their ENTIRE stimulus rebate in my future Brooklyn bookstore, and several others have kicked in at smaller amounts! Thanks, already -- you're incredible. And the project is getting some notice: Forbes' Digital Download (disclosure: this is my friend Dave who helped out with the website), BookSquare, Living Read Girl and Book Patrol Book Patrol have given some link love, and more are to come. Hooray! You shall receive your shirts, bags, buttons, discount cards, and signed book in due course. Don't forget to spread the word to others in blogland, even outside our bookish realm -- I have a sense that there are lots of folks out there hoping to do something worthwhile with their stimulus rebate, and a lot of little investments can go a long way.

I'm off to Book Expo America in Los Angeles this week, to hobnob with my fellow booksellers and publishers, find out the buzz for the next season's books, and get more educated about best practices for independent bookstores. Check out my blog for a complete schedule and updates on other projects. Happy reading!

Welcome to Stimulating Reading! I'm Jessica Stockton Bagnulo, an independent bookseller in New York City, and I thank you for your interest in using your stimulus payment to make a difference for the economy, the community, and literacy.

I'll be posting news and updates about the Stimulating Reading campaign, and my quest to open an independent bookstore in Brooklyn. Right now I'm researching retail spaces in and working on fundraising. You can read about the earlier steps in the process in my guest posts on The Bookshop Blog. And you can read my postings on bookstore life in New York City on my own blog, The Written Nerd.

You may also read comments here from the other great folks who are working with me on this project. Dave, Amanda, Steve, Sarah, Miraida, and Michael are the ones who are really making this happen, and they're all as passionate about it as I am.

Always feel free to email me if you have questions about the project, or you want to share your thoughts on bookstores, the stimulus payment, or related issues. I may even post some of your thoughts here.

Thanks again for visiting, and for Stimulating Reading. I'll keep you posted!
